Numana is a small town far 20 kms from Ancona. It overlooks the sea in the wonderful setting of the Conero Riviera; in fact, its environment is included for more than 90% inside the Conero Natural Park.

As summertime special holiday resort, Numana offers to whom decide to spend their time excitements and unforgettable moments.

The small built up area of upper Numana – looking like the close Sirolo – is placed on the top of a cliff dropping sheer into the sea: it is a web of steep narrow streets full of history, with white limestone buildings, and the tight alleys of “Torre” (Tower) zone.
Whereas the lower Numana is the small tourist harbor area, and the promenade going down towards south is characterized by many tourist facilities and buildings and bathing establishments. Numana includes three hamlets: Taunus, Marcelli and Svarchi.

What to see in Numana:

The Crucifix

The Crucifix, a wooden Romanesque sculpture, is contained in the Crucifix Sanctuary built up between 1561 and 1566, and successively restored in 1968 because a structural danger made it unsafe. The tradition attributes the work to the evangelist Luca, realized shortly after Christ burial. Carried to Syria during the Crusades Period, it was worshipped by Charles the Great according to certain – even if supposed – prodigies, and then was given to Pope Leone III. It arrived to Numana because of a violent storm that forced the Emperor and his retinue to land at Numana port and to leave the relic at the St. Giovanni Battista Church. As the time passed, it was forgotten until 1924, when some fishermen found it out in the sea, only after that a sea-quake made falling part of the cliff which the old village stretches on top of.

The Fountain

Built up using old stones found before 1663, it was commissioned by its inhabitants in order to be used by pilgrims. You can see it at Morelli Str, between the Sanctuary and the Parrish house. Its 5 mouths take water from an old Roman Age staple.

The Bishop’s Palace

It was built up in 1773 as summer residence for Ancona Bishops; then, it was got by Italian State in 1911. After having been used as an accordion factory since 1966, it was completely restored and given back to the Municipality in 1983, when became the definitive office for the Town Hall.

The Tower

Located in the most panoramic view of the town: it’s worth visiting it!! Being the only medieval ruin of this very ancient town, it is considered what remains of the old St Giovanni Parrish, after the 1930 earthquake. In fact, it was used as Bell tower, and in its lower side also as for Church Sacristy. Once lost its aspect of tower, now it has an arch appearance.

The State Antiquarium

The State Antiquarium stands behind the Town Hall. It is an archeological museum established and opened to public since 1974; it contains numerous archeological ruins found in Sirolo and Numana, and among them there is a part of the rich set, with the ruins of the ancient chariot, of the “Sirolo Picene Princess Grave”- found out in the archeological area of the necropolis at the “I Pini” place in Sirolo. The Numana and Sirolo archeological finds are also contained in some important world museums, such as the British Museum in London and the Metropolitan in New York.

The Tourist Port

In the lower Numana you will find the Tourist Port, one of the two tourist landing places present in Marche. Over several years it is awarded with the Blue Flag for the services they offer and the meticulous environmental management.

The Excursions

For the trekking and walk lovers we advise you the chance to make a series of mountain hikes on the Conero, either going on search of its geological, botanic and faunal aspects, of historic ones (Hermitage, Roman Caves, and so on…),and also going down to the seaside walking along as impassable as charming paths, such as the Wolf Pass. The Conero Natural Park official paths are 18, and it is available a map both at the Park and the next Tour Offices, together with the one more specific, dedicated to the geological aspects.

Scuba Diving

For the scuba diving lovers, we advise you that Numana hosts the Conero Mountain Scuba Point. Into these sea waters, with depths that go from 4 to 18 metres, and around at its numerous and wide shoals composed by huge dimensioned reefs, it is possible to explore Conero sea and its wonderful shallows, to watch its rich fauna (cuttlefishes, squids, basses, giltheads, lobsters) set into this splendid and coloured sea environment.
Please, do not miss the superb ice cream of Morelli Ice-Cream Shop in the town centre.

The sea wonders:

When you are in Ancona or in whichever place in Marche and you hear talking about Morro D’Alba, they will immediately match this name not to a place but to an Ancona oenological typical product: the famous Lacrima di Morro D’Alba. Morro D’Alba is a small village at 200 metres a.s.l. placed in Ancona hinterland, afar from the province capitol less than 30 kms.

As far as we can know the town was populated already during Roman Age and it is still keeping important ruins of its past: two Roman villas discovered in St. Amico place. The origins of the built-up area should however be traced back to around the 1000 year, when the village was mentioned as Curtis into an imperial Act by Federico I, as an ancient golden medallion reporting the restored words “Theodoricus pius princeps invictus semper”; now it is kept at the delle Terme Museum in Rome.

In 1213 Morro D’Alba was defined as “Castrum” into an Act in which Senigallia gave it up to Jesi. There are many sieges and raids documented over the years, and in fact in 1365 the walls that defended the small village were reconstructed. It passed to Malatesta of Rimini, and over the years bore sacks former by Ancona and later by Francesco Maria Della Rovere. During the Napoleonic rule it was taken away from Jesi and since 1860, with Italy Unity, joined definitively Ancona province.

Its name reminds the mora (or boundary stone) set on the alba (or hill) marking the medieval frontiers division between Jesi and Senigallia. In 1861 to the name Morro was added the word Alba. Completely closed by walls of the second half of fiftieth century, nowadays it keeps numerous estiges of its past: the walls themselves and the inner walk “La Scarpa” (a parapet walk fully covered, communicating with several panoramic lookouts situated on the six pentagonal towers), the undergrounds (a real underground town, composed by a labyrinth of caves dug over the centuries beneath the houses), the Town Hall, the St. Gaudenzio and the Holy Annunziata Churches, the very interesting Utensilia Museum about sharecropping culture.

In the above mentioned small St Amico hamlet, we advise you the beautiful historic residence Marotti Campi property, set in the vineyards. The whole area offers stimulating routes such as the Via del Sole (the Sun Road), two exciting routes fit for mountain bikes and another one dedicated to the horse rides.

Deep red ruby coloured with remarkable and clear purple shades, deep pleasant smell, full-bodied and with dry taste, characteristic soft flavour of medium body. When you come and visit these places, please do not miss tasting the very famous Lacrima di Morro D’Alba DOC wine.

Hereunder some of the wine factories that you will find on the territory:

Antica Cantina Sant’Amico (St Amico Old Cellar)
The factory name originates by the place in which rises the owner’s building complex that includes also a wide park with ultra hundred-year-old trees, an elegant villa of ‘800 and a private church.

Az. Agraria Mario Lucchetti (Mario Lucchetti Farm)
By Marches sharecropping farm world, holding the same attention and skill…

Az. Agricola Fratelli Badiali (Badiali Bros Farm)
It has got about 5 hectares area vineyard cultivated and placed onto the gentle, pleasant and precious Morro D’Alba hills.

Az. Agricola Marotti Campi (Mariotti Campi Farm)
Marotti Campi Family, land owners since nineteenth century, now has got about 52 hectares of new vineyards.

Az. Agricola Orlando Olivetti (Orlando Olivetti Farm)
Our farm is strictly family-owned and is now arrived to the second generation.

Az. Agricola Stefano Mancinelli (Stefano Mancinelli Farm)
Upon the Morro D’Alba gentle hills, into an area with a particular vocation of Marches hinterland, there Stefano Mancinelli cultivate vineyards and olive groves.

Az. Agricola Vicari Nazzareno e Vico (Vicari Nazzareno and Vico Farm)
Since ‘800 in Morro D’Alba village it was well known the sharecropping Vicari family wine-growing and producing experience.

Fabriano, known all over the world for its paper factories, is a town in Ancona Province placed in a valley characterized by gentle hills and surrounded by the mountains of Umbrian-of the Marches Apennines over 325 metres a.s.l. its strategic position on the territory allowed since remote times old settlements of stable communities. It is for this reason that visiting Fabriano you will find vestiges of ancient civilizations starting from Paleolithic Age: there developed the Picene, Umbrian, Gaul Senoni civilizations, and so on…

Among the most interesting places that we advise you to come and visit, there are for sure: the Podestà Palace, a medieval style public building that was built up in 1255; the St. Francesco Portico, built up on the half ’400 on the plan of the renaissance architect Bernardo Rossellino; the Sturinalto Fountain, a splendid gem into the frame of the Central Square; the St. Venanzio Cathedral with its impressive inner decorations and its beautiful frescoes of Fabriano school of the XIV and XV centuries; the Mazzolini Giuseppucci Chemist’s Museum that has been dedicated to one of the oldest and most important pharmacy of Italy; the Bruno Molajoli City Picture-Gallery, dedicated to the important art historian Bruno Molajoli; the Town Hall of the 1350, reconstructed in 1690 that was been old residence for Chiavellis, town princes until 1435; the St. Maria del Buon Gesù ex-Hospital, an exceptional example of late Gothic architecture; the Paper and Watermark Museum, set in the old St Domenico Monastery; and all the other churches on the Fabriano territory, such as the Charity Oratory, the Saints Biagio and Romualdo Church, the St Onofrio Church or Scala Santa, the St Agostino Church, the St Lucia Novella Church.

As written before, the Fabriano environment you will discover is characterized by the presence of mountain landscapes rich in woods, that had always caught the attention of hike in the mountains lovers. Looking at the NNW side you will see towering: the Nebbiano mountain (790 mts), the Strega mountain (1276 mts), the Catria mountain (1701 mts); on the west hand you will see: the Cucco mountain (1566 mts); while on the east hand: the San Vicino mountain (1479 mts); at the end, on the SSW hand: the Nero mountain (1424 mts) and the Maggio mountain (1361 mts). From this one originates Giano torrent going through Fabriano and joins to Esino river level with Borgo Tufico hamlet.

Hereunder you will watch at the video of the interesting Apennine Project promoted by the vice-president of Ancona Province Mr Giancarlo Sagramola.

The town dialect, that someone thinks as a vernacular considering the limited area in which it is spoken (in practice the only Ancona town territory), according to the local traditions should be born in the Port Neighborhood, particularly in the small square “Chioga”, existing anymore.

In fact, in this area there were fused three ways of speaking: the one of the dockers, the one of the Levantine sailors coming from East and established in Ancona, and the one of some families originating from Veneto lagoon that set in Ancona in order to devote themselves to fishing.

Now, when someone speaks about Ancona dialect it immediately reminds you the small village of Varano, a hill far few minutes by car from Ancona and placed on the Conero Riviera.Varano is one of the castles of Ancona, when the town was still a free republic (1532); it served as defense for the Conero area, together with the castles of Montacuto, Poggio, Massignano, Sirolo and Numana.

Every year, between August and September, in Varano there takes place a real vernacular kermis: the Varano Dialect Festival, a special and rich show dedicated to the theatre and to the poetry using Anconitano (Ancona dialect), that over the time has captured thousands people’s attention becoming in this way the most important dialectic show parade of the whole Province and the Marche region.

Eleven nights of the good laugh, to live and enjoy them all; the small square of Varano, called “ the dialect village”, welcomes the passionately fond of the dialects and the curious ones.

At the same time as the Festival, there takes place in Varano also the show “Conero DOC Red Wine”, dedicated to the famous wine produces into the Conero area and, therefore, also around Varano.

In the splendid Portonovo bay, and far few metres from the sea, rises an impressive military building, a show that you cannot miss: it is the Napoleonic Fort, a rare example of coast fortification.

The Fort has been built up in 1810 during Napoleonic Italian Reign by General Beauharnais as to defend the Ancona southern side, preventing the landing of English fleet ships that looked protection into the bay and water supplies near the spring of Portonovo. Someone tells that building it up there were used the stones of the very close Benedictine Monastery of Saint Mary of Portonovo, destroyed in 1320 by a landslide fell from Conero Mountain.

After the Castelfidardo Battle and after the entry of Marche into the Italy Reign (1860), the fort military function was not more necessary than before and the whole structure fell into disrepair. Successively, around the sixties, it was made an important restoration work respecting the original structure; it was this restoration work that took the Napoleonic Fort to its original magnificence. Nowadays, it works as hotel with restaurant, an ideal place for your stay in this unpolluted area.

Every year in May, Portonovo bay plays host to the Historical Porto Nuovo 1811 Commemoration; unfortunately, the 2012 edition of the historical Portonovo Battle Commemoration will not take place because of organizational problems, due to further commitments organizing Committee and its historical groups have to honour (this news received by Dott. Franco Sestilli, President of the Porto Nuovo 1811 Organizing Committee).

1811: on the 11th March starts from Ancona an unlucky military expedition of the French-Italian fleet against Lissa, held by British forces.
On the 2nd May of the same year, the Royal Navy attacks Porto Nuovo. The raid is pushed back by the garrison that counts several wounded, but prevents a local prize. This episode is told by the chronicles of the historic Antonio Leoni in its “Illustrated Ancona” of the 1832.
In order to keep the marine control of Adriatic Sea, there takes place numerous raids moreover by England, that has at its disposal a powerful fleet composed by capable commanders and well trained sailors, veterans of many sea battles, but also our Ancona pirates serving Napoleon do create a certain fame, that with cunning and courage make huge enemy booty.
The coasts protection is given to the numerous batteries depending on the Ancona Command, capitol of the former Metauro Department, and important port of the Italic Reign, always allied of France.
Two of these batteries, provided with heavy artillery munitions, are positioned as strategic defense of the Calcagno Bay: the first one, where then will rise the famous Fort, now restored; the second one, of which there remains few ruins on a crumbly ground, upon the ridge overlooking the Trave natural reef. These positions allow our coast guard gunners to effect cross shoot in the facing stretch of sea against their attackers.
But the aim of these defenses was also the one, nonetheless important, to prevent the landing to the hostile crows that needed water supply to the close water spring that, from the foot of the Conero Mountain, flows out near the bay.
For its important and rare natural resource, the Spring was mapped on charts of that time and made it known and sought-after to the sailors.
These are the themes of the research we want to propose to public attention through a historical commemoration possible by a faithful interpretation of our re-enactors.
Monte Conero, o Monte d’Ancona = Torre Latitudine 43° 33’ 19’’ – Longitudine 11° 16’ 30’’

In Ancona port area, and among the numerous historical town vestiges, you will find the “Captain House”. You can reach it walking along the port dock, going towards the right sea side; the building, frankly a bit hidden from the walls serving as port protection, was built up in the second century b.C., when Ancona became a basis for the Roman fleet patrolling Adriatic Sea. It is a medieval style house of the XIII century that survived to the second world war bombs attacks.

On its front side looking towards the sea, you will admire two big stone lancet arches bordering the entries to the house and to the stores. The whole faςade of the Captain House is characterized by a precious floral frieze of Roman epoch that, starting from the right hand with the open mouth of a wild animal, goes through it all.
Its elegance and its plain decoration made it improperly naming as the “Port Captain premises”. Indeed, that office, as resulting by still visible and existing memorial tablets, was practised by three councilors.

Nowadays the building is place for the Planetary of the Nautical Technical Institute.

Just at the Captain House back there have been recently found out the ruins of the ancient Roman port.

On the top of Vanvitelli Promenade there remained some rooms on two levels that looked out on the street. The continuity with the beneath structures – emerged as the Municipality organized the digs to realize a car park – showed with certainty that they belonged to the Roman port complex.

It has been mounted a walkway to allow digs tours; going along it, on the side looking towards the town, it is visible a piece of the walls protecting the port built up on the II century b. C.

You will see some rooms of Trajan Age (II-III century a. C.) and of rectangular shape with the biggest side perpendicular to the coast. Going ahead, on staggered planes, there you will find rooms belonging to Augustan Age, which were surely used for the construction and the reparation of the ships and of the stores.

Formerly during Roman Epoch, the port area should be limited on its northern side by the monument symbol of Ancona: the arch rising on the port northern pier. That structure, saved over the centuries by earthquakes, the sea violence and by the two world wars, in 115 a. C. was dedicated to the town by the Emperor Trajan that embellished it and enlarged the port, in order to make a logistic basis for its Dacia campaigns.
